march 10th - The Vine
"I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit. You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. John 15:1-6 (NKJV)
How good are you at surviving? Do you understand what your body needs in order to survive? How long do you think you would survive alone in an isolated wilderness? The odds are in our favor that we will probably not find ourselves in such a situation; but, for a moment, consider what you would need in order to survive. There is not a perfect order to what a person needs in order to survive, because every situation is different; but, as a general rule there are four essential necessities for survival:
When it comes to the spiritual man, there are also basic necessities for sustaining spiritual life. At the very center of our spiritual need is our relationship with Jesus. Jesus describes this relationship in His analogy of the Vine and the Branches. He is the vine and we are the branches. We find
everything that we need to be spiritually nourished in Him. Furthermore, in the words of Jesus, "Apart from me (Jesus) you can do nothing.” What does that mean? It means that without the spiritual life that comes from our connection with Jesus, we cannot and will not survive.
The question is this: How do we stay connected to The Vine that is Christ Jesus? Let me suggest some basic spiritual disciplines:
