January 10th - Connection
Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, "Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away." Then He who sat on the throne said, "Behold, I make all things new." And He said to me, "Write, for these words are true and faithful." Revelation 21:2-5 (NKJV)
Most people, even Believers in Christ, live life in a vacuum. No meaningful connection with the historic events happening in their lifetimes—no accurate understanding of the times in which they live. In blissful ignorance, they live a “Que Seroa, Sera” life (whatever will be, will be), not making a connection between their perception of mundane life and God’s dynamic purposes. Let me state clearly that life is more than a meaningless drifting; all of creation sings with God’s design and purposes and is moving towards a destination chosen and ordained by God.
Solomon was clueless. Some of his musings tell the tale:
That which has been is what will be, That which is done is what will be done, And there is nothing new under the sun. Is there anything of which it may be said, "See, this is new"? It has already been in ancient times before us. Ecclesiastes 1:9-10 (NKJV)
It is true, “There is nothing new under the sun,” unless you add the purposes of God to the equation. It is impossible to find the real meaning of life apart from being connected to God. Without a meaningful relationship with God we are existing in a vacuum, and nothing has any meaning. In a grab for meaning, people grasp at straws, trying to find a cause (any cause) that will bring some meaning to life. This is why people gravitate and passionately give themselves to
politics, environmental issues, social justice, self-help, body building, money making… These causes become the little gods that bring meaning to their otherwise mundane existence. However, they are nothing more than causes in a vacuum, because causes without the benefit of a meaningful connection to the purposes of the Almighty ultimately result in an excercise of vanity.
What does the future hold for mankind and how do we connect to it? John, the Revelator saw the future. In this future God will wipe away every tear—there will be no more death, no sorrow, no crying and no more pain. And, with all due respect to Solomon, God will make all things new. Although this speaks of a future time, those who Believe in Christ Jesus, are already citizens of this future Kingdom. The Creator is our Father. Jesus is our King. We are citizens of His Kingdom, and life has meaning, because God has called us and appointed us according to His purposes. We are already a part of that which is to come.
Author's Note: Before I am misunderstood, let me state that I believe that mankind should be a good steward of planet earth; However, saving planet earth is not my cause. If I was not a Believer in Christ--and understood the reality of what is to come as foretold by the Apostle John, I might make the saving of planet earth my cause in order to "save" our species. I believe that the salvation of our species all points to the One who said, "I am the Way, the Truth and the Life..." RJD
