february 18th - Smarter than god?
My son, do not forget my law, But let your heart keep my commands; For length of days and long life And peace they will add to you. Prov 3:1-2 (NKJV)
Wisdom starts with this understanding: "I am not smarter than God!" And neither are you—and I’m including everyone, past, future and present! One would think that with an quick observation of how great we are doing as stewards of this planet, it would be obvious that we are a clueless species. With regular frequency, our institutions of higher learning publish their "new" enlightened theories concerning the human condition and the remedies thereof; but in spite of their best efforts at social engineering they are unable to stop the cultural slide. By almost every measure that matters our culture is in a downward spiral.
The effort to redefine what constitutes a family has added to the erosion of our social fabric. Our new methods of education has led to an intellectual shortage. Our welfare system has created a new class of social downward mobility. Stripping our Public Schools of all Christian roots has left it without the moral fortitude to shape the behavior necessary for learning in the classroom. In spite of our self-congratulations and awards, we are sliding--and seem to lack the sensibility to understand that our collective intellectual pride is at the core of the problem.
If our cultural goal is regression or complete nihilism, then
we need to continue down this "progressive" bunny trail. At every turn we make the wrong choices. At every corner we turn the wrong direction. We throw away practical and Godly solutions for the idiocy of found in our pseudo intellectual pride.
How can we turn this around? Or maybe I should ask, is it even possible to turn this around? Pride has been around since the time Lucifer decided that the universe would be better served if he took over the job of being God. Delusions of grandeur are hard to dissuade. Our politicians, educators and entertainers are sure that they have all the answers; and that is the problem.
So, it starts with us--God's people. We are not the solution*, but by praying for a God-centered humility we can at least stop being a part of the problem. We need to "own" the idea that we are not smarter than God. We need to construct our lives according to His wisdom and continue to walk in it.
In a world filled with pride, humility will be a lighthouse in the gathering darkness. In a time of nihilism, our lives can serve as a stable witness of what it means to be built on the Rock. With God's grace, we can raise children and grandchildren who believe in God and live according to His commandments.
In the meantime, be aware that we are living in a time of the Emperor's New Clothes. (Look it up) The pseudo intellectual pride of man is indeed foolishness to God.
Author's Note: It seems that mankind is always on a quest to build the next Tower of Babel. There is no doubt that there is a greater understanding concerning laws of physics and the universe in general. We are advancing in technology at astounding rates. However, we are not advancing when it comes to human behavior. We still demonstrate a desperate need for a Savior, and for the compass of God's wisdom to be our ethical guide. RJD
* I want to clarify this thought. "We are not the solution." God can use the Church as a tool to bring about His rule; However, He is the ultimate solution.
