April 2nd - My Hollywood rant
Like a madman who throws firebrands, arrows, and death, Is the man who deceives his neighbor, And says, "I was only joking!" Where there is no wood, the fire goes out; And where there is no talebearer, strife ceases. As charcoal is to burning coals, and wood to fire, So is a contentious man to kindle strife. The words of a talebearer are like tasty trifles, And they go down into the inmost body. Fervent lips with a wicked heart Are like earthenware covered with silver dross. He who hates, disguises it with his lips, And lays up deceit within himself; When he speaks kindly, do not believe him, For there are seven abominations in his heart; Though his hatred is covered by deceit, His wickedness will be revealed before the assembly. Whoever digs a pit will fall into it, And he who rolls a stone will have it roll back on him. A lying tongue hates those who are crushed by it, And a flattering mouth works ruin. Proverbs 26:18-28 (NKJV)
I know what you’re thinking—at least what I would be thinking at this point; what a truly strange passage of scripture. Not the usual uplifting truth that anchors most devotional writings. So, why the choice? If there is a scripture that describes Hollywood—this is a good choice. Hollywood has long been involved in the Evangelism of destructive thinking. The most complimentary thing I could say about Hollywood is that they certainly make hypocrisy look glamorous.
One matter is certain—Hollywood has no conscience. They decry the violence found in real life society, but make movies that glorify violence. Violence that is so over the top that it is unbearable to watch; and then they defend their movies by saying that their movies do not influence behavior. Really—are you serious? They push many of the new values found in political correctness and run a movie making machine that continually runs right over the top of anything remotely correct. Hollywood demonstrates prejudice, misogyny, discrimination, greed, dishonestly and hypocrisy on a level that has no equal.
Here is a hard truth: “A lying tongue hates those who are crushed by it.” What does that mean? It means that Hollywood has no love for the masses that are negatively influenced or effected by their movies. They will blame the gun industry for the violence that they depict and glorify. They will decry discrimination while casting “white” people to play ethnic parts. They champion women’s rights while exploiting women as sexual objects. I could go on…but, then this would sound like a rant.
The point of this devotional is simple: “We” cannot allow Hollywood to be our social conscience. They are so deep in the hole of hypocrisy that they cannot see the log lodged in their collective eye. We must look to God and His Word in order to develop a healthy and realistic worldview. Secondly, unlike Hollywood, we need to walk the talk. The Church has long been viewed as the seat of hypocrisy by secularists; I guess it has been a long time since Hollywood looked at themselves in a mirror.
Author’s Note: I am writing this out of righteous outrage. I am tired of the self-appointed, self-righteousness of Hollywood. They are leading the charge of a declining, dying culture and seem to be unaware of the unholy role they have played. When faced with their own hypocrisy they brush off such suggestions as if it is beneath their consideration. It is time for Believers to tune out Hollywood. RJD
